The RED directive establishes a new regulatory framework for the market placement, free movement, and putting into service of radio equipment and telecommunications terminal equipment within the European Union. Its scope extends not only to terminal equipment (those connected by wire or using frequency spectrum), but to all radio equipment, including telecommunication network installations (e.g., GSM base stations). The RED directive replaced the previous R&TTE Directive 1999/5/EC.
When a product bears the CE Marking, the respective manufacturers or representatives in the European free trade area are able to demonstrate that the product is 100% compliant. They are required to issue a declaration of conformity in writing and to compile a series of documents including a description of the equipment, drawings and diagrams, references to the applied standards, test reports of executed tests, etc.
